Calgary is commonly knows as "The Stampede City" and the city's identity is strongly tied to this. The name is accurate as the Calgary Stampede draws over a million people annually to Calgary. The event runs for 10 days and consists of a rodeo, an exhibition, a midway and a festival. The downtown core of Calgary all but shuts down to business during this time every summer as days and nights are filled with pancake breakfasts, beer gardens and corporate parties.
A huge parade always marks the beginning of the stampede, in which the position of 'parade marshall' is revered. The parade often runs in excess of 2 and a half miles and usually lasts about 2 hours.
The rodeo is usually considered the main attraction of the stampede and is the World's Richest Rodeo. The purse is over $2million in prizes.
